Maths today

Confused about how maths is taught today? Feel like you can't help your child with maths because " it is taught all different?" The good news is the answers are still the same!
It is likely that you were taught the written method where you use columns to add, subtract, multiply and divide. This strategy IS still taught, but children are expected to learn a number of other strategies, many of which they can do in their head.
These strategies are taught in a series of progressions called "stages." Children are expected to complete Stage 6 by the end of Year 6.
This link provides information about the strategies and knowledge required for each stage. Your child should be able to tell you what stage they are at. If not, come and ask me.
